How does sugar affect my teeth?
Frequency matters more than quantity.
It's frequency, not just quantity, that matters most. Every time you eat or drink something sugary, the bacteria on your teeth produce acid for around 20–40 minutes afterwards.
Sipping sugary drinks throughout the day, or frequent snacking, keeps your teeth under near-constant acid attack — far more damaging than the same amount of sugar eaten in one sitting.
Sticking to sugar at mealtimes, rinsing with water afterwards, and keeping up regular check-ups are the simplest ways to limit the damage.
